INVESTMENT STRATEGY:
Small, early-stage funds driven by emerging managers, while a minority, have been a major force behind the success of the venture industry. Argon is a next-generation fund in this select class that will continue to drive the industry with a strong value proposition:
Unique cross-border model
Although Canada is the world's third largest venture market, a majority of the investment is allocated to the corridor between Waterloo and Montreal (Eastern Canada). Western Canada has outstanding technical / entrepreneurial talent, cost competitiveness, top-tier research institutions, and favorable tax / government programs. Argon is the only U.S. / Western Canada cross-border venture capital fund. The partnership boasts a local General Partner, a strong relationship network, and a wholly-owned angel organization.
Proprietary early stage process
Argon's fund size enables effective early stage investing. Our partners focus on small early-stage transactions and provide frequent "hands on" management. Argon's integrated investment process includes ownership of the largest angel organization in Western Canada, and leverages our vast relationships with universities, tech transfer offices, government agencies and business network. As a result, Argon has access to a privileged deal flow and the ability to do "pre-diligence" prior to institutional financing.
Broad, balanced "team"
Argon's "team" is comprised of a collection of industry professionals and global market leaders. Our core management team is a balanced group with extensive industry, entrepreneurial and venture expertise. This core team is further enhanced by our high-profile Advisory Board, with significant financial alignment in the fund; a unique, formal business relationship with IBM; and strategic business and university / research network.
Existing early-stage portfolio
Atypical of inaugural funds, Argon has an existing investment, representative of its early-stage investment philosophy. Anagran has created a cost-efficient router that combines high performance and quality of service. Co-investors include Draper Fisher Juvertson, Advanced Technology Ventures, and ArrowPath Venture Partners.
